Follow-Up Letter to triCity, published Jan. 6

Follow-up Letter to the Editor, January 1, 2006

TriCity Editing or Censoring?

"I have made this [letter] longer, because I have not had the time to make it shorter."
— Blaise Pascal, "Lettres provinciales", letter 16, 1657

Unfortunately, I did not make my letter to the triCity News, “Justified Right: ‘Out of Steam,’ But Not Out of Hot Air,” shorter. As a result almost half of what I wrote was cut from the letter you published in the December 22 issue.

Was that editing, suppression or outright censorship?

What was cut contained specific examples of insularity, intellectual flabbiness, and one dubious quote to support my criticism of the Justified Right column. What remained of my text was without the “edge” (usually touted by triCity) I intended.

One of the cut passages contains the sentiment which drove me to write the original letter:

“Thankfully, there are still patriots, like John McCain and David Brooks among the conservatives, who remind us of the moral high ground for which this country was once admired around the world. They remind us, too, that ‘Eternal vigilance is the price of liberty,’ especially in times like these when demagogues abound.”

Readers who care to read the full text will find it here: http://marioapnj.blogspot.com/

In the future I will try to K.I.S.S. (Keep it short and simple.)
